Blog Post Title One
Adding colour to your interior spaces doesn’t just add vibrancy, life and atmosphere to your rooms, it has the ability to invoke emotion and feeling too. It can easily transform a space from ordinary to serene, uplifting or invigorating.
If you know you simply love blue or some other favourite colour and must have it in your home but are overwhelmed with the choice of colours and hues then here are some practical tips to help you explore the art of incorporating colour into your home.
Understand the Power of Colour
By understanding the psychological effects of different colours you can consider the emotions you are wanting to invoke. Perhaps you're aiming for a serene master suite, shades of blue and green can help create that ambience. If you're looking for an energising and uplifting entertaining area then hues of yellow and orange can help vitalise a space. It can help to spend some time with objects or samples of colours to notice their effects on your psyche and the atmosphere they create.
Start Small
A lot of people make the mistake of adding too much colour at once. Before diving into bold wall colours and big changes try instead to introduce pops of colour through accessories such as rugs, pillows, artwork or curtains. This allows for easy experimentation and makes wrong choices easier to change or replace when you and your taste evolve.
Get Inspired
Befriend Pinterest or get your mood board skills honed and explore what colours you are drawn to and resonate with. Try and make the processes intuitive rather than head driven by really feeling into what tones, palettes or colours inspire you and reflect your personal style.
It's All in The Balance
I’m known for my love of pairing neutral base colours such as white or beige with carefully chosen bold accent colours. Try to avoid too many contrasting colours and instead try a balanced mix of hues in the same colour palette - not sure how to get in touch and I’d love to share the secrets of making colour work in your space.
The 60,30,10 rule
This is the guideline interior designers swear by. The 60-30-10 rule states that a harmonious colour scheme should be composed of approximately 60% dominant colour, 30% secondary colour, and 10% accent colour - aka the POP. Following this rule can really help achieve a harmonious, cohesive and visually pleasing space.
Consider The Lighting
Keep in mind that natural and artificial lighting can affect the way colours appear. While warm lighting can enhance warm tones, cool lighting can make cooler tones appear more vibrant. Always test colours where you plan to place them.
Create a Colour Flow
When incorporating colour throughout a home, aim for a sense of continuity and flow. Pick a dominant colour or colour family and carry this through your spaces through accents in paint, furnishings or decorative elements. This helps create a seamless transition between rooms.
Above all, be brave and don’t be afraid to experiment.
